Basic Illustrator Autumn Tree Tutorial Pt1 [w/ subs]

00:00:00 – ok so I'm going to take you guys through
00:00:02 – and just a quick tutorial to show you
00:00:06 – how to make fun item leaves kind of like
00:00:09 – this one right here and you should have
00:00:12 – followed the instructions to properly
00:00:14 – open a new document so those
00:00:17 – instructions are given a google
00:00:19 – classroom
00:00:20 – ok now something like this is not that
00:00:23 – complex because what we're going to do
00:00:26 – is break down and the individual shapes
00:00:30 – that make up this leaf so what I want
00:00:34 – you to do first and is come over here to
00:00:37 – your tool panel and you'll notice that
00:00:40 – there is a rectangle tool i want you to
00:00:42 – hover over that you see it says
00:00:45 – rectangle so i want you to click and
00:00:49 – hold down and we get this whole other
00:00:51 – menu of shapes so I want you to select
00:00:55 – the ellipse tool which is a fancy word
00:00:58 – for circle and i want you to click and
00:01:04 – drag to make an oval now you'll notice
00:01:10 – that if we start to look at this leaf it
00:01:13 – doesn't necessarily look like it's made
00:01:16 – of ovals but what we're going to do is
00:01:18 – manipulate this shape into the kind of
00:01:21 – pointed and shape that make up this leaf
00:01:25 – so with that we're going to use a new
00:01:29 – tool that is and the direct selection
00:01:33 – tool that's our white arrow and you know
00:01:37 – we haven't used this before so i'm going
00:01:39 – to show you kind of and then meet things
00:01:42 – that we can do with it
00:01:43 – so with this circle selected i want you
00:01:47 – to click on that white arrow tool what
00:01:51 – you'll notice i'm going to zoom in just
00:01:53 – a little bit you'll notice that the
00:01:56 – bounding box goes away from our shape
00:02:00 – and it just snaps to the actual circle
00:02:04 – and we see that there are four anchor
00:02:06 – points that make up this shape
00:02:09 – ok anchor points are important when
00:02:12 – we're talking about
00:02:13 – vector artwork because these form a path
00:02:17 – that is specific to that shape in this
00:02:20 – path is able to be changed and resized
00:02:24 – no no matter what the size and and keep
00:02:27 – the shape intact without being pixelated
00:02:29 – so those anchor points are important
00:02:33 – now if you click on the top one you
00:02:39 – notice all the other anchor points kind
00:02:41 – of turned white
00:02:42 – this one is selected those who its kind
00:02:44 – of that and indigo blue color
00:02:46 – ok and we see these handles that are
00:02:49 – sticking out from any other anchor point
00:02:53 – that has any kind of relationship to
00:02:55 – this one these handles control those
00:02:59 – curves
00:03:00 – ok so if I'm hour to pull one it kind of
00:03:03 – changed in and changes the integrity of
00:03:05 – that shape cocaine
00:03:07 – so what I want you to do I want you on
00:03:12 – your keyboard to hold down the hall and
00:03:17 – you notice there's a little plus sign
00:03:19 – that pops up and when you hover over
00:03:22 – that handle ok
00:03:25 – this means we're going to add a change
00:03:28 – to this handle all right so i want you
00:03:31 – to click and hold down as you're holding
00:03:34 – alt on your keyboard
00:03:36 – okay and i just want you to pull down
00:03:38 – till it kind of gets that little wavy
00:03:43 – curve here so we see it's it's pointed
00:03:47 – and then it kind of curves down and out
00:03:49 – kind of that leafy and movement
00:03:53 – okay i want you to do the same thing to
00:03:56 – the other side and get it as close as
00:04:00 – possible to that other one that we just
00:04:02 – changed ok so this is a good start we
00:04:05 – start to see kind of a leafy shape start
00:04:11 – to form
00:04:12 – hey so this one down here i'm going to
00:04:15 – show you a different way to make a
00:04:17 – change to it and this one involves the
00:04:21 – pen tool
00:04:22 – ok the pen tool is also very handy we
00:04:27 – is this a lot in the future but you
00:04:29 – notice if you hover the pen tool over
00:04:32 – one of these anchor points you see a
00:04:34 – minus sign and that that's to remove it
00:04:36 – we don't want to remove it but we do
00:04:39 – want to apply a different and attribute
00:04:42 – to that anchor point so I want you to
00:04:44 – hold down the same key alt on your
00:04:47 – keyboard and you notice it turns into an
00:04:49 – open-air oh ok i want you to hover over
00:04:53 – that bottom point and click on it with
00:05:00 – that open arrow ok that takes away any
00:05:03 – curve applied to that anchor point so
00:05:07 – now we start to see we've got kind of a
00:05:09 – leafy shape happening here so now we
00:05:15 – need to start to give it some color so I
00:05:16 – want to come over here I've got my shape
00:05:19 – selected and i'm going to come over the
00:05:22 – swatches palette here I don't want a
00:05:26 – white leaf I want kind of an Orange Leaf
00:05:29 – so I'm just going to click on one of
00:05:32 – those swatches here and then I'm going
00:05:35 – to click in this in the on the stroke in
00:05:38 – the background and click none so we
00:05:42 – don't have any black outline around it
00:05:45 – ok now we've got a good start so what I
00:05:51 – want you guys to do i want you using and
00:05:54 – the quickest way to copy and shape I
00:05:59 – want you to hold down alt key click and
00:06:03 – drag and you'll notice that it's gonna
00:06:04 – work because it turns into those double
00:06:06 – arrows
00:06:07 – hey so make five copies
00:06:12 – well technically for copy so there are
00:06:14 – five leaves ok and then I want you to
00:06:18 – rotate these sleeves and start to form a
00:06:21 – shape kind of like this one over here
00:06:23 – okay you rotate by selecting the shape
00:06:32 – and then putting your mouse to the
00:06:34 – outside of that corner
00:06:38 – and it turns into that swivel icon
00:06:43 – ok now we're starting to see some shape
00:06:46 – take form but we need to cut short and
00:06:50 – some of these and use your guides to and
00:06:55 – you'll notice an illustrator a lot of
00:06:57 – these hot paint guides will pop up their
00:06:59 – helpful use that so they share this guy
00:07:05 – looks cute
00:07:07 – if you want to make sure there's not an
00:07:11 – Abe's there's not any like weird stuff
00:07:15 – happening down here at the bottom we can
00:07:18 – kind of manage those shapes in and
00:07:21 – resize them so we've got a nice and
00:07:28 – curved happening here at the bottom
00:07:31 – yay very cool
00:07:35 – so we've kind of got a shape going here
00:07:37 – so what I'm going to show you how to do
00:07:40 – now is form that into one shape so
00:07:44 – instead of using our five separate
00:07:46 – shapes we're going to make it one leafy
00:07:49 – shape okay so click and drag across all
00:07:52 – of those that we just formed together
00:07:55 – and you see we can we can tell where
00:07:57 – they're individually separated
00:08:00 – okay now I want you to go to window
00:08:03 – pathfinder swatches palette up this
00:08:11 – panel right here is really helpful will
00:08:14 – use this a lot but what I want you to do
00:08:18 – with this selected if you hover your
00:08:21 – mouse over that first icon we see a
00:08:24 – description pop-up and that says unite
00:08:26 – this means it's going to form together
00:08:28 – all of those shapes that are selected
00:08:30 – ok so click on that and we see we've got
00:08:33 – one shape
00:08:35 – awesome so now i'm going to show you how
00:08:39 – to rough it up those edges to make it
00:08:43 – look leafy and what we're going to do
00:08:45 – with the leaf selected is going to
00:08:48 – affect the store
00:08:51 – and transform Ruffin ok make sure your
00:08:58 – preview box is selected so we can tell
00:09:01 – what's happenin
00:09:02 – this is a little crazy so what we need
00:09:05 – to do is tweak some of these options now
00:09:08 – relative we don't want that to be
00:09:10 – selected we want an absolute translation
00:09:14 – of what's happening in our and panel
00:09:17 – here and we're going to make it 3 pixels
00:09:22 – just to make it kind of small and then
00:09:26 – i'm going to change the detail to like
00:09:29 – 30 actually let's make it 35
00:09:33 – ok so and then you'll see if we've got
00:09:39 – these different options i want my points
00:09:43 – to be smooth and that has more to do
00:09:46 – with the translation into vector artwork
00:09:50 – when we expand the shape and I'll show
00:09:52 – you that in a minute
00:09:53 – so this looks pretty cool so let's play
00:09:56 – let's click ok and if we zoom in we see
00:10:00 – this lovely little leafy shape
00:10:03 – ok now we see that this path is still
00:10:06 – smooth we want to snap that path to the
00:10:10 – detail that we just created so with your
00:10:13 – leaf selected go to object expand
00:10:18 – appearance and now we have a path around
00:10:21 – all of those detailed textures that we
00:10:28 – just added ok so now we're going to add
00:10:32 – some texture
00:10:34 – I'm sorry some color to it that is
00:10:37 – texture and with that I'm going to use
00:10:40 – my gradient panel
00:10:41 – ok so right now it's kind of this golden
00:10:45 – orange color so i'm going to click and
00:10:50 – drag that orange color to your gradient
00:10:55 – panel and I know you guys will have a
00:10:57 – default black-and-white and
00:11:01 – gradient already happening and that's
00:11:02 – fine just click and drag those those
00:11:05 – colors that you don't want and click and
00:11:09 – drag the ones that you want to apply to
00:11:11 – that gradient panel so if I want to add
00:11:15 – kind of that highlight the outside that
00:11:18 – would be cool
00:11:19 – look it looks like it's on fire all cool
00:11:23 – you can change a lot of these attributes
00:11:27 – and in your gradient panel so right now
00:11:30 – you guys are probably seeing something
00:11:32 – like this because it's linear we want to
00:11:35 – change the type of gradient to radial so
00:11:37 – that way it kind of glows in the middle
00:11:39 – if you don't have that glow effect it's
00:11:43 – kind of a darker going to lighter use
00:11:45 – this icon right here to reverse your
00:11:48 – gradient ok so that's how you do that
00:11:54 – it's pretty cool and then the last thing
00:11:57 – we want to do is apply some of that
00:11:59 – veining to our leaf to make it look like
00:12:03 – it's really and living it's got some
00:12:08 – things in it
00:12:09 – ok and with that you can select your
00:12:11 – brush tool this is one of the only times
00:12:13 – i will tell you to use the brush tool
00:12:15 – and anytime you're creating something
00:12:18 – you want to use a complete path like a
00:12:20 – shape tool or a pen tool but since this
00:12:23 – is just and putting some stroke details
00:12:27 – and the brush tool will be fine
00:12:30 – so with that I'm just going to kind of
00:12:36 – draw some veins into you the ends of
00:12:43 – these leaves and it doesn't have to be
00:12:44 – perfect
00:12:45 – it can be kind of whimsical looking and
00:12:50 – remember it believes the veins are
00:12:54 – perfect the kind of offset from one
00:12:56 – another and after you draw these you can
00:13:02 – change it from this very contrast e
00:13:05 – black color into something more soft and
00:13:09 – light like a dark brown or orange
00:13:12 – ok so I'm going to kind of change that
00:13:19 – anytime you're trying to select multiple
00:13:21 – things the easiest way is to select all
00:13:25 – of it by clicking and dragging and then
00:13:29 – you can be selected anything from that
00:13:31 – by holding down shift and clicking on
00:13:33 – the thing you don't want so I just held
00:13:37 – down shift and I clicked on our leaf
00:13:39 – okay so now we've got all of these
00:13:43 – lovely being selected I'm going to apply
00:13:47 – this dark brown make sure your stroke is
00:13:50 – selected and not your fill we don't want
00:13:52 – to fill these in and then up and up in
00:13:56 – the top you'll see since we have a line
00:13:58 – selected that we have these and stroke
00:14:01 – options so you can do something simple
00:14:04 – like that a basic stroke which would be
00:14:09 – very fine tune or this rough one that's
00:14:11 – kind of neat since we're up in those
00:14:13 – edges i think i'm going to leave my like
00:14:15 – that and then i'm going to change the
00:14:17 – stroke weight 2.5 so it's more fine
00:14:23 – actually i'm going to change that color
00:14:27 – to a dark or in orange
00:14:30 – yeah that looks better that looks cool
00:14:33 – so when you're done click and drag to
00:14:37 – select all of it and then you're going
00:14:39 – to right-click and group it together
