New: BackSlash Linux – Elsa – Full Preview [w/ subs]

00:00:05 – [Music]
00:00:13 – hello linux fans Rob here welcome to
00:00:19 – lenox quest is always thank you for
00:00:20 – watching about a week ago I had an
00:00:23 – opportunity through a new video series
00:00:25 – I'm doing called district flash where we
00:00:28 – take a look at linux distributions in
00:00:30 – five minutes or less
00:00:32 – I took a look at back / linux Anna and
00:00:35 – at the time i was impressed with what i
00:00:37 – saw in backslash Anna it took a day bein
00:00:41 – / upon to base with a modified cinnamon
00:00:44 – desktop and some very nice steaming and
00:00:46 – put it all together to create I thought
00:00:48 – on a nice district now during that video
00:00:51 – i did mention that there were a few
00:00:53 – things that needed to be updated I felt
00:00:55 – like and through some dialogue with the
00:00:57 – developer Lucifer Conrad Reeves he has
00:01:00 – given linux question opportunity to
00:01:02 – share with you
00:01:04 – pre-release look at the upcoming
00:01:06 – backslash Elsa so this is not available
00:01:10 – for download yet you can find it
00:01:12 – sometime around December twentieth i
00:01:14 – believe it will be released i'll have a
00:01:16 – link in the video notes to the back /
00:01:19 – linux website but again this is not
00:01:21 – available but thankfully we get to take
00:01:24 – a look at this and so instead of doing
00:01:25 – this through the district Flash format i
00:01:28 – wanted to go through this for more of my
00:01:30 – typical linux distro review so that you
00:01:33 – can get a good look here and there are
00:01:34 – several things that have changed
00:01:37 – alright so well let me start off by just
00:01:38 – talking about the install process it was
00:01:42 – straightforward and very very minimal
00:01:44 – basically you enter in your username
00:01:46 – your password information you go from
00:01:49 – there
00:01:50 – right into partitioning there was not an
00:01:53 – option for delete all and you know
00:01:55 – install this OS fresh you you do have to
00:01:59 – go in and manually select the
00:02:01 – partitioning setup but that was fairly
00:02:05 – straightforward and easy and the install
00:02:07 – process was quick it's not your typical
00:02:09 – abun to installer process that you would
00:02:12 – see you know in a typical a bun to base
00:02:15 – distribution now the other thing that's
00:02:17 – different here is this is using the
00:02:19 – pantheon desktop as well as a kernel
00:02:24 – which is four point 4.0 dashpot
00:02:27 – three generic so you've got some
00:02:29 – underlying changes here and some changes
00:02:31 – in the desktop environment there's also
00:02:33 – some theming changes going on here which
00:02:36 – you see in place and so we'll talk about
00:02:38 – all of that
00:02:39 – let's first take a look at some of the
00:02:41 – applications that are in place and
00:02:43 – you'll see a few things here that you
00:02:45 – made it may not be familiar with albert
00:02:47 – is one of those you can activate Albert
00:02:49 – by hitting the windows or medichini
00:02:52 – along with the spacebar and you'll see a
00:02:54 – pop-up here for quick search it's more
00:02:57 – of a universal search you can search for
00:02:59 – documents or applications and i found it
00:03:01 – to be very fast and a nice addition to
00:03:04 – back / linux now some other things
00:03:07 – you'll find here you've got two modes
00:03:09 – and this this pantheon desktop if you're
00:03:12 – not familiar i want to backup I don't
00:03:14 – want to skip this if you're not familiar
00:03:16 – with the pantheon desktop it is what is
00:03:20 – used by another distribution called
00:03:23 – elementary OS elementary OS has a lot of
00:03:26 – built-in applications that you will see
00:03:29 – here that are part of the elementary OS
00:03:33 – itself and are very professional and
00:03:37 – polished and so we'll be taking a look
00:03:39 – at those as we step through some of what
00:03:41 – pre-installed so you've got to a view by
00:03:45 – category in a very quick search here
00:03:47 – again I'll do firefox and we'll pull
00:03:50 – that up and firefox by the way was not
00:03:52 – pre-installed I set that up and then you
00:03:54 – have a category of you hear someone to
00:03:56 – step through the category view so under
00:03:59 – accessories again you've got Albert
00:04:01 – which was the quick search your typical
00:04:02 – files on disk screenshot tool things
00:04:06 – like that as well as backup under
00:04:08 – graphics are going to see a lot of the
00:04:10 – usuals there you're going to see GIMP
00:04:11 – and simple skin but then you here here
00:04:14 – you see the photos app now the photos up
00:04:17 – again that's part of the elementary OS
00:04:20 – side of things or / pantheon side of
00:04:22 – things and again they are very polished
00:04:25 – applications they are designed to look
00:04:29 – very cohesive with the rest of the OS
00:04:32 – and I think they succeed at that where
00:04:34 – I've always felt I don't know maybe a
00:04:37 – little limited with within a lot of
00:04:40 – these pre-built apps that are specific
00:04:44 – to the pantheon / elementary OS you know
00:04:48 – there's not a lot of options in place
00:04:50 – and things like that basic functions
00:04:52 – work very well and again they're very
00:04:55 – professional-looking apps and you know
00:04:58 – for the most part I think are very good
00:05:01 – addition to set you know the elementary
00:05:05 – OS and in this case the backslash linux
00:05:07 – OS distributions apart from others so
00:05:11 – let's go back in here to applications
00:05:13 – will go under internet here I pre
00:05:15 – installed firefox or excuse me i
00:05:17 – installed firefox but we see some other
00:05:19 – apps here that are not typically
00:05:21 – pre-installed such as Dropbox skype and
00:05:25 – teamviewer also under office you're
00:05:28 – going to find that the standard
00:05:30 – LibreOffice under other you'll see note
00:05:33 – pad now this isn't a linux notepad
00:05:38 – application this was actually a setup
00:05:42 – under let's go to about this was
00:05:46 – actually set up and installed under wine
00:05:49 – and i went through that process earlier
00:05:54 – i was surprised i expected to launch
00:05:55 – right into you know
00:05:58 – gtk style notepad but instead it is set
00:06:03 – up the process of wine and we'll talk
00:06:05 – about that in just a minute you'll see
00:06:06 – that wine was pre-configure preset up
00:06:09 – pre-installed let's go back here to
00:06:13 – science you're going to see LibreOffice
00:06:15 – math now under sound and video you've
00:06:18 – got a nice selection here
00:06:20 – presario disc burner music that is
00:06:23 – impact camera and music are both
00:06:25 – elementary OS / pantheon applications
00:06:29 – and again you'll see a very uniform look
00:06:32 – from from this app to the other it looks
00:06:34 – like they were meant to be together you
00:06:37 – know they serve the purpose well and for
00:06:40 – the most part other than the theming
00:06:42 – here it's going to be identical to what
00:06:45 – you would find in elementary OS so we go
00:06:51 – from there
00:06:52 – i installed voco screen and v
00:06:54 – c media player let's just jump into
00:06:56 – videos here and you'll see again minimal
00:06:59 – design here but you know it it's not a
00:07:03 – lot going on but you know it serves the
00:07:06 – purpose its non intrusive and again it's
00:07:09 – themed in a way to kind of match the
00:07:12 – rest of the applications and I like the
00:07:15 – selection of pre-installed Debbie GDB
00:07:18 – package installer as well as synaptic
00:07:20 – package manager
00:07:22 – you've also got a firewall configuration
00:07:24 – setup here little interesting to see
00:07:26 – boxes pre-installed so I like the
00:07:29 – selection here of things that are
00:07:31 – typically or aren't always
00:07:33 – pre-configured or pre-installed you know
00:07:37 – when a bun to base distribution going to
00:07:39 – skip over app center right now we'll
00:07:42 – jump into that in just a minute and then
00:07:45 – we've got wine so I want to talk about
00:07:47 – this as well i think that for a group of
00:07:51 – a select group of people who are still
00:07:53 – struggling be it because of work or a
00:07:58 – particular piece of software that only
00:08:00 – runs in windows maybe that's job-related
00:08:02 – or maybe it's something that you know
00:08:05 – you've used personally for years in
00:08:06 – windows and there's not an alternative
00:08:09 – for you in linux but you have interest
00:08:12 – in trying linux or using linux but
00:08:15 – there's one or two pieces of software
00:08:17 – that hold you back
00:08:18 – i would urge you to take a look at wine
00:08:20 – and do a little research and find out if
00:08:24 – what you're trying to run would work
00:08:27 – within wine and if it does that gives
00:08:30 – you an opportunity to try you know my
00:08:33 – opinion is superior operating system and
00:08:35 – still be able to use you know that one
00:08:38 – or two apps that are holding you back
00:08:40 – now wine can be you know kind of a pain
00:08:43 – and it depends on the distribution
00:08:45 – you're setting wine up on it doesn't
00:08:48 – always work the way it should and you
00:08:51 – know it's certainly not perfect but this
00:08:53 – goes a long way to helping you get there
00:08:56 – to have this setup you know
00:08:59 – pre-installed i think is a good idea for
00:09:03 – for many of you out there i personally
00:09:05 – do not use one but in the
00:09:07 – case again if i needed to you know if I
00:09:10 – had to use microsoft office for example
00:09:13 – there are versions of office that run
00:09:15 – really well under wine
00:09:18 – alright so let's go back to system tools
00:09:20 – i want to jump into App Center so if you
00:09:24 – have used or you have looked at
00:09:26 – elementary OS you'll see that this is
00:09:30 – their app center and for the most part
00:09:35 – i'm very impressed with the Polish and
00:09:38 – the overall look of the App Center I
00:09:41 – like these large category blocks with
00:09:44 – different colors they all stand out
00:09:47 – individually and so you know if you
00:09:50 – click on audio you then go into this
00:09:54 – list of various audio packages or you
00:09:57 – can search and you know for the most
00:10:01 – part the search is very fast and it'll
00:10:05 – help zero down to the particular app as
00:10:08 – you type you continue to type you'll see
00:10:11 – that narrow down the list of
00:10:13 – applications now here's where I'd like
00:10:15 – to see a little more description
00:10:17 – you've got certainly room here for more
00:10:19 – description or you could make room for
00:10:21 – more description that's not a backslash
00:10:23 – linux issue that's just this is this is
00:10:26 – the the App Center for elementary OS
00:10:29 – it's impressive
00:10:30 – there is room for improvement there and
00:10:33 – you know it's nice to have a one-click
00:10:36 – install so if you're a new user to linux
00:10:39 – i think that the app center here that's
00:10:42 – in place by default because again it is
00:10:45 – based off of of the Pantheon desktop
00:10:48 – using the elementary OS App Center
00:10:50 – they're going to have an easy time of
00:10:53 – using this room for improvement but
00:10:56 – works very well
00:11:01 – so the App Center is is named what it
00:11:04 – should be named you know as opposed to
00:11:08 – synaptic package manager or some other
00:11:11 – nondescript way of obtaining software
00:11:14 – alright let's get into the taskbar and
00:11:18 – settings and things like that perhaps
00:11:19 – this is the first time you've had a look
00:11:22 – at the pantheon desktop so i want to
00:11:24 – step through some of those features
00:11:26 – which I think are very nice and really
00:11:28 – help you know backslash as well as
00:11:33 – elementary OS really helps it as far as
00:11:37 – being a a well-presented polished
00:11:40 – distribution so here we have our power
00:11:43 – button which will show you the username
00:11:46 – you can lock screen logout suspend or
00:11:50 – shut down from there
00:11:52 – you also have a very nice notification
00:11:55 – system in place and the ability to go in
00:11:59 – and set up various notification settings
00:12:01 – for various apps so you've got bubbles
00:12:06 – sounds and notification center
00:12:09 – those are your options / application and
00:12:12 – so it's nice to be able to go in and
00:12:14 – configure that individually this one I
00:12:19 – particularly like is the the little
00:12:21 – applet here for your power so not only
00:12:23 – do i see the battery or excuse me in
00:12:26 – this case the main battery but there's a
00:12:29 – backup battery in the keyboard of this
00:12:33 – machine
00:12:34 – there's also a wireless mouse and
00:12:38 – keyboard connected and so it's
00:12:40 – calculating the keyboard currently and I
00:12:42 – may not have that turned on that that
00:12:44 – may be why it doesn't see that
00:12:46 – let's see here if this makes a
00:12:47 – difference flip that on here and we'll
00:12:53 – go back so it's still calculating but it
00:12:55 – does show the mouse and here it's
00:12:59 – showing me apps using lots of power in
00:13:01 – this case voco screen for screen
00:13:03 – recording and here you can go right into
00:13:06 – power settings and then you can toggle
00:13:08 – on or off percentage there so i'm going
00:13:11 – to jump over the power settings
00:13:13 – and you've got here display brightness
00:13:15 – automatically adjust things like that
00:13:18 – what happens when you hit the power
00:13:19 – button and so to be able to jump over
00:13:23 – into power settings from this particular
00:13:25 – drop-down is very nice and having the
00:13:28 – additional power information from
00:13:31 – ancillary devices that are connected
00:13:33 – that again is is an area where it makes
00:13:38 – this particular desktop environment very
00:13:41 – very polished the bluetooth so that does
00:13:45 – not come on by default
00:13:47 – many of the distributions that I try
00:13:49 – bluetooth is turned on by default here
00:13:53 – it was off by default and again you can
00:13:55 – go right into bluetooth settings to make
00:13:57 – any adjustments very nice also for your
00:14:01 – wireless networks very straightforward
00:14:03 – toggle switch on or off and i like that
00:14:07 – it gave me the full list of all of the
00:14:10 – networks that are available around me so
00:14:14 – very nice job there and also the applet
00:14:16 – for sound so you have that tied into the
00:14:20 – music player you've got quick adjustment
00:14:23 – here and then you again can jump into
00:14:25 – sound settings so that is part of what
00:14:30 – makes this such a nice desktop and i
00:14:32 – think a nice choice here you've got a
00:14:34 – calendar drop-down we can jump right
00:14:37 – into date and time settings so overall I
00:14:42 – think it was a good choice to move over
00:14:45 – to the pantheon desktop i think that you
00:14:50 – see a lot of distributions out there
00:14:52 – that go with some of the more well-known
00:14:53 – desktop such as the gnome and KDE in
00:14:57 – many cases you'll see you know cinnamon
00:14:59 – and you know we've got a lot of desktop
00:15:02 – environment options within linux and
00:15:05 – this is one that I'm happy to see being
00:15:07 – used on another distribution now it's
00:15:10 – going to be up to you to decide if you
00:15:13 – would want to use back / linux instead
00:15:16 – of let's say elementary OS because the
00:15:19 – overall feel and functionality is going
00:15:21 – to be very similar to elementary OS but
00:15:24 – what you're going to find over in the
00:15:26 – application side
00:15:27 – is some additional software packages
00:15:30 – that you will not find within elementary
00:15:33 – OS now some other differences is the
00:15:35 – overall appearance this has got some
00:15:38 – theming that's in place that I think
00:15:40 – very attractive when I first saw this
00:15:42 – this is an icon set that i've been using
00:15:44 – for sometime called LOL kappa teen but i
00:15:49 – believe that it's called something else
00:15:53 – here i believe it's been renamed and
00:15:55 – there's credit been given their you've
00:15:57 – got an interesting mix of wallpapers
00:16:00 – here as well this one was default I want
00:16:04 – to go to one here will apply that you
00:16:08 – can also go in and apply the icon size
00:16:11 – to the doc here at the bottom and then
00:16:16 – you can go in and set up your hot
00:16:18 – corners as well for various commands so
00:16:21 – you can have multitasking view up in the
00:16:23 – upper left corner we're going to keep
00:16:25 – that to nothing and i'll just give you
00:16:27 – an illustration here someone to go to
00:16:28 – multitasking view in the lower left over
00:16:32 – here in the right we'll go to let's see
00:16:35 – here let's go to show application menu
00:16:39 – just to give you an idea of how that all
00:16:42 – works so we've got a change here so i
00:16:46 – thought this was an interesting
00:16:47 – wallpaper so we're going to go here you
00:16:50 – see the multitasking view so you can
00:16:53 – toggle through from desktop to desktop
00:16:56 – very nice and then here we could launch
00:17:00 – right over into applications so hot
00:17:03 – corners are very nice they can be very
00:17:05 – handy once you get used to their
00:17:06 – functionality it makes for a quick way
00:17:09 – to to access things so let's jump over
00:17:12 – into the theming will take a look at the
00:17:15 – settings
00:17:17 – actually let's jump over into files
00:17:19 – first and so here you're going to see
00:17:21 – with the exception of theming it's laid
00:17:24 – out in a way that's very cohesive with
00:17:26 – the other default built-in apps
00:17:29 – I'd like to see more settings options
00:17:32 – and things like that then you what you
00:17:34 – have in place here you know you can zoom
00:17:36 – in zoom out you know you can sort hereby
00:17:40 – name
00:17:41 – sighs so on and so forth reset to
00:17:44 – default show hidden files but you are
00:17:47 – somewhat limited compared to say dolphin
00:17:50 – or some of the other like throwing our
00:17:52 – file managers things like that if you
00:17:55 – right-click on a folder you've got
00:17:56 – options here for open open with cut copy
00:18:00 – paste you know typical move to copy to
00:18:03 – make a link rename move to trash
00:18:06 – compress and then you could go into
00:18:11 – properties so lots of folder file
00:18:13 – options with right-click a nice easy
00:18:16 – straightforward a list here of all of
00:18:19 – your different folders and places so for
00:18:22 – the most part it will get the job done
00:18:24 – I think limiting in some areas as far as
00:18:27 – settings and things like that you've got
00:18:29 – two views really go back to home you've
00:18:32 – got a list view and icon view as well as
00:18:37 – search but for the most part very clean
00:18:38 – very attractive
00:18:40 – let's just go and i want to double-check
00:18:41 – here let's see if we're missing anything
00:18:45 – no don't believe so
00:18:49 – alright so we'll close that out and
00:18:54 – let's jump over into settings you'll see
00:19:04 – here the theming is intact throughout
00:19:06 – the OS so it gives it a cohesive feel
00:19:09 – and I like the look it'sit's a bright
00:19:11 – look it's certainly not dull
00:19:15 – let's jump over to tweaks so under
00:19:23 – tweaks you're going to find several
00:19:24 – options here you you've got tweaks for
00:19:26 – appearance fonts animations
00:19:29 – miscellaneous and then under
00:19:32 – applications you have various tweak
00:19:35 – options not for everything terminal
00:19:40 – options things like that
00:19:42 – options for videos so let's start with
00:19:44 – appearance now the gtk theme here is
00:19:47 – titled backslash but you see here as
00:19:51 – default you can change that over to
00:19:52 – elementary the default element
00:19:54 – we look want to keep that backsplash and
00:19:56 – what this actually looks like to me is
00:19:59 – the Ark theme and but i believe credits
00:20:04 – been given to the theme that is now
00:20:07 – being called back / but i believe it is
00:20:09 – actually the Ark theme and the same with
00:20:13 – the icon theme here it's called a
00:20:16 – backslash icon theme or but yes let's
00:20:19 – see make sure yes backslash icon theme
00:20:21 – but you also see pre-installed the
00:20:23 – noumic circle new mix light the
00:20:27 – elementary icons the standard lumix and
00:20:31 – the above two icons so nice selection
00:20:35 – here of icons and things and again I
00:20:39 – believe this is a el capitan icon theme
00:20:42 – here because this file folder here if
00:20:45 – you would work to look that up and i
00:20:47 – believe credit is given to the icon
00:20:50 – theme but it has been renamed you but
00:20:54 – overall I think it's a great look
00:20:55 – alright and the cursors i believe the
00:21:00 – same it's been renamed but you have the
00:21:03 – option for elementary and then you have
00:21:06 – a dark mode that you can toggle on or
00:21:09 – off and then under layout you'll see
00:21:11 – windows and then we could take that back
00:21:14 – to elementary as well so you know I
00:21:18 – think the theming is is very attractive
00:21:20 – very professional
00:21:22 – everything feels polished it feels fast
00:21:25 – duh you know I'm impressed with what I
00:21:28 – see here so in this case if you find it
00:21:30 – interesting if you like the theming and
00:21:33 – you like some of the software that's
00:21:34 – pre-installed over say elementary and
00:21:37 – what they have going on then this might
00:21:39 – be an option for you to keep your eye on
00:21:41 – for sure so it's always exciting to see
00:21:44 – new development
00:21:45 – alright that's it for now hope this
00:21:47 – helps keep your eyes peeled around
00:21:49 – December twentieth for this release and
00:21:51 – we will check you later
